John Sherlock tragically died in 2010 and was vice-chairman of the FAI Junior Council, vice-president of the Connacht FA and secretary of the Roscommon and District Soccer League.
Mr. Sherlock was also a member of the FAI National Council, the FAI Development Committee and the Connacht FA Executive Committee, at the time of his death.
In recent years, Mr. Sherlock's memory has been honoured annually at the FAI Delegates Dinner with the presentation of the Services to Football Awards.
FAI Chief Executive John Delaney officially turned the sod on the building on the new 300-seater stand in Roscommon, and paid tribute to his former colleague.
"I was delighted to be invited to Roscommon by the Roscommon and District Soccer League on Wednesday to turn the sod on the building of the John Sherlock Stand.
"John was taken well before his time, but his legacy has been a lasting one at local, provincial and national levels.
"The FAI named the Services to Football Awards in John's honour, and I'm delighted that footballers in Roscommon will now get the opportunity to play in Lecarrow for years to come and constantly be remembered of the great man John Sherlock was.”
The stand is expected to
be completed in early 2019
