U12 lose out in Divisional Cup Final

October 5, 2018

Our young U12 lads took on a strong Roscommon town side on Tuesday evening in the second of two Under 12 Division Cup finals played at Credit Union Park, Glen Celtic.

From the outset Roscommon showed their extra experience which no doubt they picked up in their time in the Premier Division. Our goalie Eoin Brennan was busy in the first half and made a number of outstanding saves, but eventually we were broken down for the opener. However what our lads lacked in years they did not lack in heart or ability. After going one goal down the lads got an added resolve and were led from the centre by the smallest giant on the pitch - Iarlaith O’Toole and that was the end of Roscommon’s attacking until half time. We created chances ourselves and Dylan Joyce who was a constant menace on the right wing ably assisted by Kyle Connaughton and Darragh O’Dowd in the centre kept Roscommon pegged back. Both lads got some decent ball into the feet of Leo O’Connor not long back from injury but unfortunately this was a solid Roscommon defensive outfit and try as he may he was unable to break them down. We had one last chance with a great Tom Griffin header going just inches over the bar denying us the chance to go into the break on even terms, granted against the run of play but it would not have flattered our lads. Kaylum Divilly, Sean Reilly and Ross Hegarty at full back and wings gave great platforms on either flank to thwart Roscommon attacks and launch our own counters.

The second half started one down but we came out of the blocks racing as did Roscommon. There were 6/7 minutes of enthralling attack and counter attack from both teams, without to be fair much end product. However Roscommon did score with what was in fairness a bit of a sucker punch for us. But in true cup fashion the lads decided if we are going to go down we will go down in a blaze of glory. Our attack was now bolstered by Shayne Ward, Ruari Kenny, Luke Dolan and Callum Lee Clark. We attacked Roscommon from every angle but that goal remained elusive. However as usually happens to the team willing to go down in a blaze of glory we leaked a couple more goals in our quest for an opener.

Well done to Roscommon Town on winning a truly brilliant final.

In the dressing room after team captain Darragh O’Dowd on behalf of his team mates thanked his coaches, the club and all the parents for bringing them all over the league for a great seasons football. A word of thanks also to Padraig Clarke at the Rdysl League on his fantastic ability to run a season like clockwork.

This was a fantastic season for this Under 12 team and we look forward to our winter of Futsal and the new season next spring.
